An experiment on the Amazon MTurk....
Last month I talked about the Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) in a Blog post. The MTurk allows orgqanisations or individuals to pose simple tasks which are then completed by anybody in the world in exchange for a small payment.
This month, I decided to try and find out how people around the world are using the MTurk to make money in their spare time. How much could you earn? How interesting is the work? Where do the 'Turkers' come from? Could this be an opportunity for you and me to earn extra cash in our spare time? What better way to find out than to use the MTurk itself to survey the people doing the work......
I put $10.00 credit into the system and posed a task which asked 'Turkers' to post a comment on this Blog describing their experiences using the MTurk. I'm offering $0.10c for every comment recieved. That means I could hope to recieve up to 100 comments, not to mention an insight into this mini online economy.
18 Feb 21:16 : I have nearly 50 comments so far from all around the world, so it seems to be working. Check out the comments to see how people are making money from this ingenious website.
23 Feb 14:39 : The $10 I offered in $0.10c rewards is nearly finished and I have nearly reached the target of 100 comments. Most Turkers seem to enjoy earning a few extra cents in their spare time. I have had many comments from India, quite a few from the USA and some from the Carribean and the Philippines. The best 'pay-rate' I can see anyone getting so far is about $2/hour with the worst reported being less than $0.20c/hour! Perhaps we won't make our fortunes on the MTurk, but how much money can you earn whilst watching Eastenders?

I have been using MTurk for about 2 weeks. I have made about 7 dollars and spend only about 2 hours a week on it. I do it while watching TV and am hoping that by the end of the year it will pay of Christmas.

I love MTurk. I just joined the site about a week ago and I've already made close to $300! I love that I can work in my pajamas and work whenever I want. Considering the economy, this is the best possible solution for me. I have tried to get a job everywhere, and even then, the only jobs that I could get as a college student with no degree (yet) were very physically demanding jobs. As an intelligent person, I am glad I can use some of my brain power to do jobs on MTurk.

My name is Claire and I love in Los Angeles. I have been using MTurk since early December and have since made around $400 + bonuses for approximately 9000 HITs (I know, I can barely believe it myself). The last HIT I did was a short survey for a $0.03 reward. The pay falls anywhere between a penny to a dollar generally, sometimes for way more work than it's worth obviously, and worse, sometimes the HITs don't pay at all (look out for the hidden scam offers especially). The completed HITs do add up though so if you have the time, the need for extra daily pennies and the patience for menial and repetitive tasks like I do, come TURK with me. I will definitely keep visiting so long as Mturk keeps fresh HITs coming in.

I have been using mTurk for about seven months now, and I really enjoy it. The tasks are relatively easy, and even a bit fun and give me a bit of pocket money. As a college student, it is hard to find ways to make some money that I can spend guilt free, but mTurk provides me with that opportunity. I have been able to get DVD's, books, and even a killer pair of heels with the money I've made off of the site, and I can see myself still working on this site for many years!
I live and work as a teacher in Ontario, Canada. I have been an MTurker for just under a year. I try to earn one dollar a day, figuring that I could buy a few Christmas presents with this and help out the household budget, but many days I earn 2 or 3 dollars. In eleven months I have earned $455. I spend about 1/2 - 1 hour a day on MTurk but some days I don't work at all, it depends on how much free time I have. I like doing rewrites and surveys and like the variety of jobs I can do depending on how much energy I have. Today I did some sentence rewrites, a few surveys, a hit where I filled in forms based on advertisements and this hit of course. The best day was when I did some captchas since they were so easy and paid well, or a hit where I had to compare sizes. My teenage children sometimes work too, they like identifying images. It is like playing games online but getting paid!

All work should be open to all and qualification rate should be highest 90% for any work. I often enjoy working with mturk especially with the image work given by dolorslab.

I joined M-turk two months back. It is a very good site to make money provided you devote one / two hours daily. My name is Ross, I`m working in Mturk less than a month. I just want to list some bad things: Mturk won`t display more than 10 HITs per page, you have to click and click and click "next" to find interesting or well paid task. And you do have to look through dozens of pages because of Conjecture Corp, Mutabel Dolores and some others "spamers", which upload hundreds of identical HITs instead of merging it in one or may be ten.

I have been using mturk from past 6 weeks. I like the kind and variety of work that Mturk HITS has. I love to do this work. I am spending 1-2 hours daily on this HITs.
I have been "mturking" less than a month, made about $55.00 so far with about $20.00+ more pending. I really enjoy doing it because I have learned a lot and I get paid in the process. Not only is it fun and profitable, but I think it may be slightly addictive. If anybody has any hints for a relative newcomer, I am open to advise on how to be successful.
I've just dipped into Mturk today for the first time, so that I could understand what it's all about. It seems dicey to me, frankly, the haven for spammers and other potentially shady activity. And the money offered/earned for most tasks is incredibly small. But it did give me insights to try it out.

I am LDAV from US. I started working on MTURK a few months ago. While I enjoy the ability to make money from home, MTURK is sometimes difficult to use. The reason is because there are too many hits that need to be weeded out that are improper. I dont want to have people scamming me for my information and having to sign up to sites to perform work or be asked for nude photos. The article rewrites and the surveys are great . It would be nice if the Requestors kept their word about bonuses more regularly also.

I really only work when I have downtime at work, which varies depending on what's going on. In total I have earned about $150 - my favorite thing to do is complete surveys because they are simple and often don't require much legwork from my computer. (I can't run flash at work.)
I have been turking since last Oct. I am a student and a full time mom, and I have made about $400.00 so far. Hi, i'm using mturk for some days and i make 2-3 $ per day working for couple hours when sitting to pc and listening music etc, i'm student living in eu so it's just like some extra cash. the jobs are ok - some of them don't pay well but you can skip them and choose what you can. some hits like completing a survey can pay you for 0.60 max but thats kinda rare.
I have been using Mechanical Turk for 9 months. I have been unemployed and it is nice to make some extra money. I used my money to buy some Chirstmas gifts from Amazon. You have to be careful in what you sign up for as I have found many scams on it. I tend to mainly do surveys as I enjoy them and they aren't sketchy like some of the jobs.

I have $33 to my credit and the most interesting HIT that I worked on was, tagging 10-second music clip. However I would like to suggest that ,some of the HITS available are not valid to this part of the globe(some survey HITS) and should be stated as such, otherwise its a nice experience. I would like to see HITS with more amounts and with more variety.

Hi. I'm from Asia. I'm new to mTurk. I find most of the requests very interesting. There is one HIT I recently accomplished that I find most stimulating. It required me to post my reactions to different scenarios. I learned a lot about myself like the things I value. My brain is stimulated while I earn.
Hi, I'm Cady. I've been doing Mechanical Turk for a little while now when I'm bored. Most of the time I do psych surveys because I actually really enjoy participating in research like that. The money doesn't hurt, either - so far I have made $40, which really isn't bad for doing things that I enjoy when I would otherwise just be doing nothing worthwhile at all. The thing I most dislike about MTurk is the amount of fake HITs there always are cluttering up the real ones.

The reason for this being that the HITs look simple but when you accept them and actually start working, then you realize the effort involved. Anyways life is not so simple as it seems. The best ever hit for me is to put URL on Wikipedia. I love to do the photo submission hits. As i'm an engineer, i spent 3 hours/day. Mturk helps for pocket money.
I've been on MTurk for months now and haven't made over $7. Most of the jobs are under paying or are scams that trick workers into filling out their personal information for no pay. Someone should really do something about it. I swear, when I hit $10 I'm never using MTurk or Amazon again.

I just started using MTurk a couple days ago, after hearing about it in a lecture at the Law School of the University. I wanted to understand how it worked, and what HITs were like. I've earned a few dollars for hours and hours of work. The most annoying HITs are those where they just want you to submit your ID to websites; the best ones are the psychology experiments and surveys. The poorest paying ones are the transcriptions - they pay $0.40 for a 20-minute task. I won't continue to use the turk.

My opinion of the work offered at mturk can vary depending on work offered at any given moment. Sorting out all the potential bad requesters not to work for, is an ongoing dilemma, but I try hard to avoid those who wish deceive. The latest HIT I did, was to provide feedback on website design. The most enjoyable HIT I've done is hard to answer. Maybe it was the first one, because I got paid to give an answer.

I was amazed with the scores of HITs (tasks) available every day. I remember, prior to Christmas, the total number of HITs had reached a whopping 800,000. Till date, I have earned $135.00. If a person is able to dedicate his/her time and efforts, I am sure he/she can earn a modest income. I love some of the HITs which are more or less a challenge to me. Competing with other Turkers to get hold of the maximum number of HITs and not compromising on quality results, is fun. Of course, with due course, I learnt a few tricks to navigate and search for my favorite HITs. I pride myself in saying that I have managed to maintain 99.5% approval rate. MTurk is the pioneer in such a concept on a globalised platform. I am sure other competitors will soon follow suit. I agree that the pay is less for most of the HITs, but then we have many advantages too when compared to Jobs in companies. After all, if one loves his/her work, it's not work - it's FUN!!!

I just love Amazon mTurk! I do it when I have some free time during work, and I've made a decent amount of money that I can spend without any guilt!
