Intuitive usability is an essential quality that all systems must possess if they are to be successful; and online systems, such as websites and ecommerce systems, are no exceptions to this rule. Yet in spite of this apparently obvious requirement, the World Wide Web is littered with systems that baffle, confuse and ultimately frustrate to the point of abandonment, anyone attempting to interact with them.

Usability is a subjective discipline and consequently has few absolutes; however, one is the importance of a system’s navigation, which must enable all users to immediately answer three questions. Where am I? Where have I been? Where can I go? If users are unable to instinctively grasp the answers to these questions within a couple of seconds, then they will become confused and disappointed and system is likely to be unsuccessful.
