Today Interdirect announced its implementation of the wayfinding touch-screen systems for the newly redeveloped St. David’s Shopping Centre, Cardiff. Interdirect was appointed by St. David’s partnership, a joint venture between Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres in June 2009 and had developed the sytem within 3 months.
Following the successful launch of next generation technology for shoppers at thecentre:mk, the top regiobal shopping centre situated in the heart of Milton Keynes, St. David’s has implemented Interdirect’s state-of-the-art touch-screen and digital signage system across the £675 million shopping centre. This will bring shoppers real time and regularly updated information on the latest store news, offers, events, and retailer job vacancies, as well as acting as a navigation tool and store finder.
Interdirect’s touch-screen system is content managed and enables authorised users, such as shopping centre managers and retailers, to log in and update touch-screen content. This can then be pushed to a variety of media channels including: digital signage, touch screens, websites and mobile devices. The fully integrated nature of the system is unique and enables additional features such as automatic number plate recognition, mobile phone tracking, footfall counting and retailer performance monitoring.
St David’s has extended the existing shopping centre to provide a total 1.4 million sq ft (129,135 sq m) of retail space in the centre of Cardiff. Doors will open to shoppers on Thursday 22 October revealing the two level grand arcade which will showcase the best of the UK high street.
Nick Mann, MD of Interdirect commented: “This is a landmark achievement for Interdirect and hopefully an indication of things to come as we increase our presence in the retail sector. “
Mann continued, “Our system at thecentre:mk generated a great deal of interest and I hope that by winning in Cardiff too, the credibility and reputation Interdirect holds for our back office systems will soon match that of those in front-of-house.”
Mann finished by saying, “In both pitches, Interdirect was up against the two recognised suppliers of shopping centre software, so to have prevailed two times out of two is a terrific achievement and I believe speaks of both the quality of our solutions and our determination to take this sector by storm.”
Richard Gilbert of the St David’s Partnership commented: “The shared vision of St David’s Partnership is for the new shopping centre to build on the increasing reputation of Cardiff as an attractive destination for days out and short breaks. Cardiff already has some 27 million shoppers and 10 million tourists each year, and the extended St David’s will propel Wales’ capital city into the UK’s top ten retail destinations.
“On 22 October we hope to be opening the doors to 50 new shops, with over half of these making their Welsh debut. This will bring the total number of trading stores up to 100 across the expanded St David’s centre. With these new shops comes a dramatically increased footfall, so a state of the art technology solution that can cater for all our visitors, and of course our retailers, is vital. Interdirect is a leader in this field, as proven by their touch-screens for thecentre:mk, and their impressive track record made them by far the best company to implement this technology for the Partnership.”
